Our Mythical Childhood...

The Reception of Classical Antiquity in Children’s and Young Adults’ Culture in Response to Regional and Global Challenges

Homer at the Bar-Ilan University in Israel

On March 17, 2019, students from the reception class at Bar-Ilan Department of Classic gathered to present a few scenes from Homer’s “Iliad”.

The reception class is attended by BA and MA students of Classical studies as well as students from other disciplines. The course, Introduction to Classical Reception, was especially conceived for Bar-Ilan Classics Department by Dr. Lisa Maurice and Dr. Ayelet Peer, and is taught by Dr. Ayelet Peer. The course offers an in-depth survey of Classical reception from ancient times to our modern world.

For the International Homer Reading Festival, we decided to prepare dramatic performances of scenes from the “Iliad”, including:

  • the opening of the “Iliad”,
  • the dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles,
  • Achilles and Thetis conversation,
  • and the final duel between Achilles and Hector.

The students were highly engaged with the production and those of them who did not wish to actively perform assisted with directing and filming the performances.

We had a wonderful experience which we hope to continue in the following years!
